Allen Eugene Carroll Peterson was born on May 15, 1926 in rural New Effington, South Dakota to Emil and Clara (Moxness) Peterson. He was baptized on July 25, 1926 at Walla Lutheran Church in rural New Effington and confirmed at St. Josephs Lutheran Church near Rosholt, South Dakota on June 30, 1940. He attended country school in the rural Rosholt area through the 8th grade. He grew to adulthood during the Great Depression as his father worked as a hired hand for farmers in the area. On April 17, 1946 he enlisted in the US Army where he served until his honorable discharge on October 18, 1947. For his service he received the Victory Medal. On September 1, 1951 he was united in marriage to Mayme Jane Walz at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Dumont. To this union two children were born. Upon discharge from the Army Allen worked for the railroad for a short time and then ran his own dray line business in Rosholt. After Allen and Mayme moved to Wheaton he worked for creameries in Clinton, Wheaton and Browns Valley, hauling canned and bulk milk from the farm, and made hauls from Browns Valley to the Land O Lakes plant in Alexandria. As his children grew older he felt a need to spend more time at home and then began working for the Dumont Fertilizer plant and then the Wheaton Elevator. He retired from the Farmers Coop Elevator in Wheaton after 22 years in 1992. He took great pride in his near flawless driving record after millions of miles on the road and was recognized for this at his retirement. Allen enjoyed fishing and time spent with his children and grandchildren. After retirement he and Mayme spent long summers at the lake with their camper. He was a Rainbow Rider volunteer for several years, driving people from the community to and from appointments out of town. In December 2011 he entered the Traverse Care Center in Wheaton due to failing health. He passed away on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at the Wheaton Hospital with his children by his side at the age of 86 years and 6 days. Allen was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mayme Jane in 1998. He is survived by his children, Todd (Marcia) Peterson of Wheaton, MN and Corla (Gary) Enevoldsen of Montevideo, MN; grandchildren, Julie (Brandon) Oss of Byron, MN, Lisa Peterson of Brookings, SD, and Curtis and Megan Enevoldsen of Montevideo, MN. Blessed be his memory.
