Listen to Obituary

Gerald “Jerry” Grohs, age 82, passed away peacefully at home on August 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on July 16, 1944, in Graceville, MN, the son of Joseph and Ethel (Ostermann) Grohs. He grew up in Wheaton, MN, and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1962. He began working for a road construction crew on May 14, 1964, and just two days later, on May 16, he married the love of his life, Avis Hormann. Together they raised four children and shared 62 years of marriage.

Jerry was a hardworking man who took great pride in providing for his family. He worked for MN DOT for 30 years, retiring in 2004. Jerry raised livestock on a hobby farm throughout the years. During his retirement years, he assisted his son-in-law with farming—as recently as the spring of 2026.

Jerry enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and treasured the many family gatherings, sporting events and hunting expeditions. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, golfing, horses and spending time at the cabin on Lake Traverse. He enjoyed a good visit and had a knack for striking up a conversation with just about anyone.

Jerry will be remembered for his strong work ethic and willingness to lend a hand. His grandchildren had a way of bringing out his tender heart. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

He is survived by his wife, Avis, and his children, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, including Becky (Jeff) Boom of Wheaton, MN, and their family: Jamie Clasemann (Aubrey and Tayben); Brandie (Riley) Maanum (Ridley, Loren and Arlie); and Brittany (Steve) Boom-Bohne. Sandra (Dennis) Kashmark of Alexandria, MN, and their family: Gavyn (Elizabeth) Ketterling (Brynn and Henley); Beau (Nicole) Kashmark (Kora, Zavier and Hazel); and Dakotah (Robin) Viktora-Kashmark (Daisy). Julie (Brent) Seifert of Stuart, FL, and their daughters, Grace and Emma Seifert. Brian (Maggie) Grohs of Watertown, SD, and their son, Bentley Grohs.

Jerry is also survived by his sister Carol (Jim) Mader and brothers: Larry Grohs, Rich Grohs, Steve Grohs, Dan Grohs, David Grohs and Kevin (Dawn) Grohs; sisters-in-law: Rita Leppanen, Ione Reynolds, and Shirley Hormann; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Edward; parents; grandparents; brother, Joel Grohs; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.
