He moved to Iowa to pick corn when he was 18 and met his wife Ruth (Metzger) when she was 15. They dated for 3 years and were married on November 22, 1936 in Peoria, Illinois. Harvey worked as a butler and Ruth as a maid for a prominent business man in Illinois. Harvey also worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company for 14 years. Harvey and Ruth then moved back to Wheaton to farm in Monson township in 1947 where they farmed until the middle 1970s, until son-in-law Lee took over most of the farming under the watchful eye of Harvey. He was always there to give assistance whenever he was needed, either to move trucks or help out when ever he could. He also helped Nick Walrath at Walrath Sheetmetal for several years. They resided at the farm until August 23, when ill health made it impossible to be at home, they moved into the Rosholt Care Center. They were snowbirds for 31 years and volunteered for 26 years at the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce in Edinburg, Texas. They enjoyed dancing at the Eagles Club in Wahpeton every Sunday. Over the years they were members of the Star Promendars Square Dance Club, played shuffleboard, and bowled for Walrath Sheet metal team. They were also volunteers at the Wheaton Senior Citizens Center in Wheaton. He loved to work in the garden with his flowers.
