Ilene Eleanor Weick was born on March 28, 1923, in Parnell Township, Traverse County, in rural Graceville, Minnesota, to George and Ellen (Johnson) Weick. She was baptized and confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church in White Rock, South Dakota. At the age of five years, her mother Ellen passed away and was then raised by her mothers sister, Clara who married George in 1930. She attended various schools in Traverse County and completed the 10th grade at the Wheaton High School, Wheaton, MN. Ilene married her loving husband of 64 years, Richard, on March 28, 1943 in the home of Richards parents, in Parnell Township. Ilene and Richard were blessed with three children, Owen Kenneth, Julieann Ellen, and Bruce Arlen. They resided in Parnell Township and enjoyed raising their children and making their living on the farm. In April 2004, Ilene and Richard made their home with Julieann and Bud, in order that Julieann could care for Ilene during her cancer treatment. In January of 2007, they moved to Prairie View Place in Wheaton, enjoying their new neighbors there. Along with being a loving and devoted wife, Ilene was a wonderful mother in so many ways. Ilene always gave of herself for her children. She will especially be remembered for her never-failing devotion to Bruce who has endured many challenges since suffering serious illnesses as an infant. She was also a faithful sister to thirteen brothers and sisters. She loved them all so dearly. She lived her life for those around her, showing her strong, unending love for and faith in God. Ilene enjoyed so much her five grandsons, six great-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren. She lived for each and every moment she was able to share with them all. Ilene has been an avid housekeeper, gardener, seamstress, and an excellent cook, learning these talents from her mothers and mother-in-law. She enjoyed helping with the farming tasks, including driving grain trucks, combines, unloading grain and running many errands. Ilene was a faithful member of Siloah Lutheran Church. Ilene gave generously of her time and talents over the years to Siloah as Sunday School teacher, Church Council President for 5-1/2 years, Memorial Committee, Synod Delegate, WELCA, both local and District offices, quilting for Lutheran World Relief, and making many banners for the sanctuary. Ilene volunteered many hours through her work with Lutheran Brotherhood, Thrivent for Lutherans, Traverse County Museum, Parnell 4-H Club, and the Wheaton Cancer Support Group. She participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life since 1999 when she faced Hodgkins Lymphoma and then the colon cancer in 2004. Ilene thoroughly enjoyed being an honorary member of the Regal Red Hat Ladies for the last several years. Their many outings brought her great joy. She also enjoyed regular dining at the Wheaton Senior Center, valuing the friendship of everyone there. Ilene was guided by her dear Lord & Savior throughout her entire life. She had complete trust in His love for her during her times of joy, illness, pain, and sadness. Her faith never faltered. God indeed held her by His hand during her last days with us on this earth and certainly holds her in His loving arms now as she celebrates with so many dear loved ones in Heaven.
