He was baptized on July 28, 1929, at Augustana Lutheran Church in White Rock, South Dakota, by Rev. Ernest A. Martell. His sponsors were Anton and Christine Peterson who were friends of George and Elsie. John attended Sunday school and Confirmation classes at Augustana and was confirmed on August 6, 1944, by Rev. On October 14, 1961, John married Helen Zibell at Gustavaus Adolphus Church in Wheaton. They made their home in Wheaton, renting at first and then purchasing a home in 1981. John drove from town to farm and Helen drove to the office in town. The couple transferred their membership to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Wheaton after the Augustana Lutheran Church closed.

John served his country in the Army from March 17, 1953, to March 17, 1955. He returned home to farm with his brother Merlyn until they both retired. John was also a rural mail carrier sub from 1956 to 1981. He then became a full time regular carrier for ten years. In 2015, John had been a member of the American Legion in Wheaton for sixty years.
