Leonard Johnson, age 94, of Wheaton, Minnesota passed away Monday, March 12, 2018 at Sanford Hospital in Wheaton.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bainbridge Funeral Home in Wheaton with Rev. Ken Bowman officiating.
Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Merton Dale American Legion Post #80. Pallbearers will be Errow Hensch, Hal Undersander, Joe Sauter, Robert Weber, Chandler Walls and Alper Simsek.
Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Veronica (Murphy) Johnson Sr.; wife Vernell (Schoonover); and brother Jerry Johnson.

Leonard Johnson was born on February 23, 1924 in Verwood, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1938 he moved to Wheaton with his parents and sister Lois. Len attended Wheaton High School where he played baseball. He graduated in 1942. After graduation Len joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 until WWII ended in 1945. After the Army Len worked at his father's Standard Oil Station in Wheaton.
In September 1948 Len married the love of his life, Vernell "Schooney" Schoonover. They were married for forty-nine years when Schooney passed away in December 1997. Sometime in the 1960's Len started working for the Minnesota State Highway Department. During that time Len and Schooney had three kids: Jack, JoAnn and Jane. In 1977 they built their dream house in Wheaton. Len retired from the State Highway Department at the age of sixty-five.
After retirement Len and Schooney would travel and spend their cold Minnesota winters in sunny Southern California with their daughter JoAnn and her family. They would go there every winter. After Schooney passed in 1997, Len continued to travel to California. He stopped traveling to California in 2013, and in 2014 he moved into Prairieview place.
In 2017 Len moved into the Traverse Care Center where he sadly passed away. Len lived a very long and wonderful life. He was so generous and friendly and loved Wheaton. He was very proud of all his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Len was the heart of our family and he will be greatly missed.
Leonard is survived by three children: Jack (Nancy) Johnson of Milan, MN; JoAnn Lane of Brawley, CA; and Jane Johnson of Ogden, UT; one sister Lois Sauter of Breckenridge, MN; six grandchildren: Stacy Haus, Samantha Stumbras, Carrie Johnson, Jessica (Bryan) Abubo all of Indio, CA; Brandi (Alper) Walls of Temecula, CA; and Alexandra Lane of Phoenix, AZ; great-grandchildren: Austin Haus, Alyssa Haus, Nelson Stumbras, Desmand Walls, Chandler Walls, Mya Abubo and Avery Abubo.Leonard was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Veronica (Murphy) Johnson Sr.; wife Vernell (Schoonover); and brother Jerry Johnson.
