Mayva was born June 7, 1946 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Otto and Emma (Enquist) Koenck. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman. She attended school in Herman before being married to Norman Bartells Jr. on December 1, 1963 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Norcross. To this union two sons were born. Mayva worked the Herman School District as a teachers aid.

Mayva was united in marriage to Winston “Wink” Johnson on July 30, 1983 in Glenwood, Minnesota. The couple resided in Minneapolis where Mayva worked at Donaldson Department Store. Mayva had a heart attack at age forty-six which made it difficult for her to be on her feet to work. She got a job caretaking at an apartment complex. She loved this job and worked twelve years as caretaker.

In 1998 the couple moved back to Herman and retired. They spent a total of nineteen years wintering in Arizona. Mayva looked forward to the warm Arizona weather each winter. Their trips to the Carefree Manor in Apache Junction also created many lasting friendships Mayva cherished. Mayva was a very spiritual person and had a passion and love of gospel music.

Mayva is survived by her husband Wink Johnson of Herman; two sons Kai Bartells of Fort Worth, Texas; and Trent Bartells of Detroit Lakes, MN; step children: Kelly (Tom) Claassen of Chokio, MN; and Jody Morris of Minnetonka, MN; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister Judy (Merrill) Carlson of Chokio, MN; and brother Jerry (Ella) Koenck of Herman.
