Roy Otto Hormann was born November 6, 1934 in Wheaton, Minnesota the third child of Otto and Myrtle (Abraham) Hormann. Roy had two older sisters: Ila and Lois, and would later be joined by a brother Dale and sisters: Jane, Rita, Avis and Ione. Roy attended a one room school with all eight grades. In the spring and fall Roy rode his mule to school, which was great when the mule didn't run home and leave Roy stranded before school got out! After grade school Roy attended Morris Ag School in Morris, Minnesota. The school started late in the fall and ended earlier in the spring so the students could help with the farming at home. Roy served his country from July 28, 1954 until his honorable discharge on April 29, 1957. Roy married Shirley Stange on October 6, 1954 in Dumont, Minnesota. Roy was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Shirley went to be with him a couple of months after their marriage. In December of 1954 Roy was sent overseas to Germany. In March of 1955 Shirley joined him in Germany where the couple rented an apartment to live. While in Germany, Roy worked for the motor pool doing repair work and maintenance of trucks. The couples first daughter Royla was born in Germany but lived only a couple of days. Following Royla's death the couple returned to the United States and were again stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where they resided until Roy's discharge. Tragedy struck the family again on January 24, 1964 when their second son Allen Dean passed away at the age of six months. Roy and Shirley made their home in Traverse County following Roy's discharge. Roy farmed his entire life prior to retiring. He milked cows, raised hogs and beef cattle. The couple built a new home in 1978 where the family enjoyed their home and yard. On June 17, 2004 a house fire destroyed their home. Following that fire, the family purchased a home in Wheaton. Roy was very proud of and enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Roy is survived by his wife of sixty years Shirley of Wheaton; children: Linda Ehlers of Wheaton; Steve (Mary Jean) Hormann of Estelline, South Dakota; Brenda (Jim) Teal of Ada, Minnesota; Janice (Ron) Dreschel of Dilworth, Minnesota; and Curtis (Penny) Hormann of Ortonville, Minnesota; fourteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sisters: Ila (Ronald) Hervey of Wheaton; Lois Wenker of Cannon Falls, Minnesota; Rita Leppanon of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Avis (Jerry) Grohs of Dumont, Minnesota; and Ione Reynolds of Spicer, Minnesota; one sister-in-law Sharon Rittenour of Nashua, Minnesota; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Roy was preceded in death by his children Royla and Allen Hormann; grandson Kevin Ehlers; parents Otto and Myrtle Hormann; brother Dale Hormann; sister Jane Depew; son-in-law Larry Ehlers; and brothers-in-law Don Rittenour, Kenny Wenker and George Leppanon.
