Thomas L. Grosland, age 84, of Grand Rapids, MN, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living, surrounded by family.
Thomas Lee Grosland was born on August 5, 1941, to S. Hubert and Ramona Grosland in Morris, MN. He grew up in Wheaton, MN and graduated with the Class of 1959 from Wheaton High School.
Tom was united in marriage on June 6, 1970, to Eileen Bourne. His college degrees include a B.S. in Music Education, a master’s degree in clarinet performance and a Specialist Degree in Educational Administration. He shared his love of music by being a band director and mentor to hundreds of students. He taught band in Montevideo, Hendricks, Starbuck, and Wheaton. He served as a high school principal in Cyrus, Atwater-Grove City and Chisholm, retiring from education in 1997.
His love of music was prevalent throughout his life. In his musical career, he performed with Orin Budke & the Tempo Kings, Hubland Orchestra, Jubilee Singers, Sound Idea, Tri-State Band, UMM Alumni Jazz Band, Swing Delivery, Coleraine City Band, Grand Rapids Area Male Chorus, and numerous church choirs over the years. He was an accomplished musician who played virtually every instrument in the band.
In his quieter moments, Tom enjoyed reading, golf, spending time with family and especially loved attending his grandchildren's activities. He had a quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, which was usually accompanied by a wicked grin. During retirement, Tom was able to travel to various states accompanied by his wife and children. Tom was a very active member of St Andrew’s Lutheran Church.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, S. Hubert and Ramona Grosland, infant brother David, in-laws Henry and Joy Bourne, and brothers-in-law Dale and Dean Bourne. He is survived by Eileen, his loving wife of 55 years, daughters Karen Grosland (Kim Myers), Kristin Collignon, Teresa Schad, son David Grosland and grandchildren Georgia Collignon, Gracie Schad, Logan Schad, Max Grosland and Oliver Grosland. He is also survived by his brother Bruce (Sandy) Grosland, brother-in-law Mark (Marilyn) Bourne, sister-in-law Beth Bourne, and numerous relatives including cousins, nieces and nephews.
The Grosland Family would like to thank the amazing staff at Diamond Willow Assisted Living and the St Croix Hospice team for their excellent, compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program, Grand Rapids Area Male Chorus, or a musical organization of your choice. A loving man of faith, humility, humor and compassion, Tom left an imprint on all our hearts. Blessed be his musical memory.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 28th at St Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids, MN. Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 with a church service following at 2:00. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
