Elwina Mae McCoy was born June 3, 1932 in Redwood County, Minnesota to Elwin and Eva (VanHorn) McCoy. The family moved to a farm north of Wheaton shortly after she was born. Elwina graduated from Wheaton High School in 1950. She was united in marriage to Joseph Charles Fischer on June 29, 1950. The coupled farmed until Joe took over the welding shop in Dumont, Minnesota and the family moved there. Elwina stayed home and did bookwork for the welding shop while the children were young. She would later work at the locker plant, Ben Franklin, and at the State Bank of Wheaton. In the mid 1970’s she went back to school and became a hairdresser, managing a beauty shop out of her home for many years. In 1980 the couple started wintering in Arizona and Texas, something Elwina thoroughly enjoyed. Joe passed away in 2001. Elwina moved to the Pioneer Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota in 2013 where she resided until her death.
Elwina enjoyed camping on Ten Mile Lake, gardening and tending to her many flowers. She was a longtime member of Ave Maria Catholic Church and belonged to their Ladies Guild.
