Margaret Clairice Volker was born April 17, 1923 to Martin and Lizzie (DeVries) Volker. She completed eighth grade in country school near her childhood home in Delaware Township. Margaret was the youngest of two daughters and enjoyed being the apple of her dad’s eye. She often joked that her dad would get her anything she wanted if she just squeezed her eyes pretending to cry.

After eighth grade Margaret did household work for many different families in the area. She also worked in the local cafés and grocery store while her children were young. Margaret finished her work life at the Villa of Saint Francis in Morris where she was Dietary Manager for twenty years.

Margaret lost her mom when she was in her early twenties and often spoke of her appreciation for her aunt Alvina DeVries who played a motherly role, especially in regard to raising children.

Margaret married Raymond John Fabian on December 1, 1945 after he returned from WWII. They were blessed with seven children: Rick (Judy) of St. Cloud, MN; Jim (Bonnie); Tom (Sandy) of Sartell, MN; Rosemary (Stan Collins) of Kennebec, SD; Joan (Rick Strand) of Donnelly, MN; Sherry (Gary) Greiger of Herman, MN; and Ray (Patty) of Coon Rapids, MN; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. Margaret loved being a mom and was very proud to be grandma and great-grandma. She said being a parent was her best accomplishment.

Raymond and Margaret spent their married life in Herman. She loved spending time with her immediate and extended family. She liked to have fun and often said “enjoy the days you have”. Margaret’s excellent memory amazed her family with her detailed recollection of names, dates and events. Margaret was known for her good cooking and baking, especially bread and cinnamon rolls. After her retirement she enjoyed baking for the employees at Herman Market Company (her neighbors across the highway) and sending her grandchildren care packages of baked goodies while they were in college.

Margaret was a life long member of Bethel Lutheran Church, was involved in ladies groups, and was a beloved child of God.

She is survived by six children and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, son and daughter-in-law Jim and Bonnie, son-in-law Gary Greiger, grandson Jamie, an infant granddaughter, her parents, sister Isabelle, and many dear extended family.
